Frequently Asked Questions

Is it possible to double major in Dance and another field?

Students interested in pursuing a double major should speak with advisors in both programs to gain a sense of the challenges that may be involved in the scheduling of classes and also to assess the effect that the demands of a second major may have on the student’s ability to take advantage of performance opportunities and other opportunities for in-depth experiences in the Dance Department.   Students who have successfully balanced two majors in the past have been disciplined in their approach to their course work, and have often entered the University with some of their requirements fulfilled by AP credits and/or the completion of the College’s foreign language requirement.

Does the Department offer a minor in Dance?

No, students who are interested in course work beyond the non-major offerings either request permission to take additional classes in the Department or choose to add Dance as a second major.

Can a non-major request permission to take a course that is restricted to Majors?

Yes, most dance major classes are open to non-majors on a space available basis, providing the student has completed any prerequisites for those classes.  In some cases non-majors may need to wait until the first week of classes to add a class to assure room in the class for incoming freshmen and transfer students.  A few of the classes may fill regularly with Dance majors.  Contact the Dance Department for information about restricted courses for the coming semester.

Can non-majors audition for performances?

Yes, all of our auditions are open to non-majors.  Visit [link to current information] for updated announcements about auditions.

I am a transfer student.  How long will it take me to complete the degree in Dance?

That depends on how many transfer credits in Dance count toward requirements in the Dance major program.  See the following link for information for transfer students.
