The Department of Dance is a part of the College of Arts and Humanities and is located in the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center. We offer a BA in Dance at the undergraduate level, and the MFA in Dance at the graduate level. We provide a vital and challenging course of study, including opportunities to work with guest artists, across disciplines, and throughout the Washington DC region. The faculty consists of active professional performers, choreographers, and researchers. Our students are encouraged to become ever-more creative, engaged, proficient, skillful, and responsible artist-scholars.
The Department of Dance is one component in a state-of-the-art facility, in which guest artists, interdisciplinary projects, and challenging and inventive creative work is encouraged. Along with the graduate and undergraduate students in the Department of Theatre, the School of Music, and the Clarice Smith Center itself, undergraduate students in Dance are a part of an energetic and very busy performance venue.
Opportunities abound for performances in guest artist and faculty works, graduate works and thesis concerts, and works by fellow undergrads. Opportunities also exist for participation in the creation of cross-disciplinary projects and in community-based events. Informal showings give students the opportunity to try out new ideas and receive feedback on their own choreography. Each year the Department sends works to American College Dance Festival Association for adjudication.
