Larry Warren's
lifetime love of dance was launched when he saw the
British film masterwork "The Red Shoes" when he was 21. By the
age of 23 he was dancing, choreographing and teaching dance while still
a full-time theater arts major at U.C.L.A. After first teaching
dance at the University of Wisconsin, Mr. Warren joined the faculty at
the University of Maryland in 1971. He and Dorothy Madden, the
chair of the university's dance department, founded the modern dance
repertory company Maryland Dance Theater (MDT). Within a short
time, the new company, made primarily of students and faculty, achieved
a near-professional level of competence. In 1973 Mr. Warren
became director of the company. Four of his works - "Playlet,"
"Post Cards," "Poems for a Poet" and "Party Game" - were particularly
well-received by audiences and critics. Mr. Warren is the author
of two dance biographies, "Lester Horton: Modern Dance Pioneer" and
"Anna Sololow: The Rebellious Spirit." In 2001 Larry, along with
his wife Anne, was awarded the Pola
Nirenska Lifetime Achievement Award as two dance educators,
writers and choreographers who have played pivotal roles in nurturing
modern dance in the Washington, D.C. region. Mr. Warren retired
as professor emeritus in 1995 and is working on a biography of Jose
Limon.
